SAE 1008 is a widely specified low-carbon steel alloy within the standard carbon steel family. It is characterized by high ductility, weldability, and moderate strength, making it the preferred raw material for cold-drawing factories, mesh manufacturers, and automotive fastener lines globally. The strict limitation on carbon elements (maximum 0.10%) provides superb mechanical workability without risk of cracking during severe reduction draws.

In raw wire rod format (typically hot-rolled and cooled under controlled conditions), SAE 1008 exhibits characteristics optimized for heavy deformation. It has a typical tensile strength range of 340 to 420 MPa, a yield strength of 240 to 310 MPa, and elongation indexes exceeding 30%. These properties are finely tuned by regulating our Stelmor conveyor cooling speed after the rolling block, ensuring a high-quality ferrite-pearlite matrix with zero hard martensite phases.
Established in 2006 in Tangshan City, Hebei Province—the global hub for steel production—Hansheng Technology (Hebei) Co., Ltd. operates 8 high-performance production lines. Our geographical position places us only 150 kilometers from Tianjin seaport, enabling seamless shipping of large bulk containers. We operate with an annual production capability reaching 650,000 tons of high-grade steel products, exporting to regions in Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
With multiple active lines operating round-the-clock, we fulfill high-tonnage contract obligations punctually, keeping supply lines moving for international infrastructure projects.
Through nitrogen-atmosphere furnace controls, we restrict surface decarburization to below 1.0% of the rod diameter, preserving surface hardness and wire drawing consistency.
Our wire rods undergo highly efficient mechanical descaling or chemical acid pickling, presenting a clean profile that extends drawing die longevity.
Purchasing industrial wire rods in bulk requires careful logistics and financial planning. At Hansheng, we help clients manage transit routes, international import tariffs, and material storage conditions. Our location near Bohai Bay provides a shipping hub that reduces inland cargo handling costs and ensures that containers are transferred securely to global container ships at Tianjin Port.
Direct bulk vessels from Tianjin to ports like Jebel Ali, Dammam, and Durban, offering cost-effective freight rates and fast transit times.
All shipments align with DIN 17140 and EN standards, complying with EU import documentation and environmental certifications.
We provide ASTM A510 compliant chemistry and clear heat number trace codes for easy port clearance and localized material tracking.

Our quality system ensures that every coil of SAE 1008 wire rod meets global commercial requirements. Operating under ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 certification frameworks, Hansheng Technology employs professional inspectors to verify steel batches prior to loading. From ladle analysis to dimensional tolerances, our testing process is designed to prevent non-compliant materials from reaching our clients.
Each coil batch is sampled and subjected to tensile loading to establish yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and percentage elongation values.
Confirms structural integrity. Samples are bent flat against themselves without surface cracking, confirming ductile crystal orientation.
Our high-precision gauges maintain out-of-roundness metrics to within 0.15mm and diameter variations to within ±0.20mm on 5.5mm-22mm sizes.
We partner with major regional steel mills to guarantee raw material availability and stable bulk pricing during periods of market volatility.

The drawability of SAE 1008 wire rods depends on their microstructure. Our thermal profile controls are designed to achieve a clean polygonal ferrite grain distribution with finely dispersed pearlite. By maintaining high coiling temperatures (typically 830°C to 880°C) followed by moderate cooling rates on the Stelmor deck, we limit grain growth and prevent martensitic transformations. This structure minimizes processing resistance, reducing draw fractures and extend die life during cold-drawing.
Preparing low-carbon steel rods for drawing requires removing hot-rolled oxide scale. Mechanical descaling uses reverse bending and wire brushing, making it an eco-friendly option with lower processing costs. Chemical pickling uses hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, providing a clean surface that supports high-quality phosphate and lubricant carrier adhesion. We offer both finishing configurations to match our customers' drawing preparation preferences.
Silicon (Si) and Manganese (Mn) concentrations affect the work-hardening rate of SAE 1008. While manganese improves strength, levels above 0.50% can lead to rapid work-hardening during consecutive multi-die reductions. Similarly, silicon levels must be balanced: low silicon reduces drawing resistance, while moderate silicon improves coating response during hot-dip galvanizing. Our metallurgical process controls these elements to optimize the material for drawing and downstream plating operations.
Free nitrogen atoms in low-carbon steel can cause aging embrittlement, which reduces ductility over storage time. To prevent this, our steelmaking process limits nitrogen levels. We also use small additions of aluminum to bind remaining nitrogen into stable aluminum nitrides, helping to maintain drawing performance and ductility during extended shipping and storage periods.
